When we started researching Vrouwe Antje;s history it was to answer these questions:What was the barge made for?
Who worked or lived on it?
What was their life like?
Did they love this boat as much as we do or was it just a tool?
Time wasn't on our side. In our case a 108 years had already gone by and how much information would still be available and who will be still alive that remembers?
After 4 years we only have one gap between 1977 to 1983. We know from talking to the owners before and after that he died of drink and left the barge in poor condition after only 6 years. In some way we don't feel like contacting his family as what would we say? Every other person that owned Vrouwe Antje loved and cared for the barge hence it is still around. We think we are going to stop now and put the information together for the next family when they are part of Vrouwe Antje's history. We hope our part in her history extends a very long time in the future!
Beginning the search:
The good news is that the Dutch are well into preserving their history. Most records are now searchable by internet.
We started with what we had at the time of purchase. Most purchases, if done correctly, should have some record from the Dutch Kadaster. This is the Dutch government's record of ownership. To be really certain that no one has a claim on your ship, a Dutch solicitor must have the Kadaster records searched and amend the information to reflect the fact that you now own that ship. Then the solicitor will strike the ship off the Dutch records, if you wish to remove the ship from the Dutch register this shows that it has been exported to another country. If the ship was exported before your time but didn't have this done then it still needs to be sorted. In either event these records showed Vrouwe Antje's Meetbrief number, the date of build, place of build, the previous owners.

After this it is just depends what you are
given at the time of sale we had a old Meetbrief so didn't need to get a copy of one. If
you do not have one then the next step would be to try and see if you can get the
Meetbrief numbers off the side of your ship and see if you can get these records from the
Rotterdam Maritime Museum where they are kept. As mentioned above, you may already have
this number off the Kadaster record. A Meetbrief is a document that is required by a
commercial vessel. It shows the maximum load for your ship and its draft in centimetres
for the amount of cargo it was carrying. The weights are recorded in metric tons which was
the standard after 1819. Before 1934 the records were kept by the Inland Revenue in the
Netherlands. The Ships Measurement Service was established by Royal Decree December 11, 1933. The
measurements were done in many districts and recorded in that district on a Meetbrief
given to the captain of the ship. The records were reproduced in files kept in the head
office in Rotterdam. 
The only thing that is of real interest is where these records are now? They are stored in the Rotterdam Maritime Museum in a warehouse and can be viewed if you call in advance and organise a visit.

Back to the Kadaster again; they have records of ownership generally going back to the 1930's. Too long before the 1930's, the records are hit and miss because they were mainly records of loans. If the person owning your ship before the 1930's didn't have a loan on your ship then it may not feature in their records. In either event the records would be helpful. Email the Kadaster and request a quote for the work to dig out your records. We managed to do a little negotiation on their quoted price for the work and got a bargain.

What will hopefully come in the post are copies of old documents dating back to when your ship was built showing who owned it and what they paid. The main hitch is that it's all written in Dutch and some will be hand written and difficult to read. If you can read Dutch or you know someone that can read Dutch it helps. If you don't know anyone then the best online free translation site we have found is Bablefish.
Now at least you have a list of names of owners and you probably also have the town they lived in at the time. This is where the time consuming hard work starts. You have to start going through the genealogy sites and try to find the family records. We have a load of links below. If you are lucky you might be able to visit a living relative but if not you might still be able to find the professions of the people who owned your ship. You will then know what the ship was used for.
Update 1/2010
One of the families we were searching for owned our barge from 1911 to 1926( Dirk Kerkmeer). Over the last few years we have collected, Dirk's Kadaster records, Dirk's military records from Den Haag, his birth certificate and marriage certificate. Recently whilst working through the family tree we found a distant relation. Here is a fault in the concept that what the family business was is also what the ship was used for. The Kerkmeer's where mainly farmers but the two e-mails we received a few days ago say the ship was first used to haul sand then used as a farm shop. We were half correct!
Recently we have also found living relatives of "Thomas Borst" who had the ship built at De Boot, Alphen A/D Rijn, 1902. We are still waiting for them to send what they know. Fingers Crossed!
The next line of research you may be interested in is who built your vessel. Normally this will be shown on one document or the other so is not one of the harder bits of information to find. There were hundreds of ship builders in the Netherlands around the turn of the century and much of the records have been lost. I have included a list of the ship yards that have web sites but if yours is not listed don't despair. If you can find the village where the shipyard was located then you can probably trace the information through the local historic societies. The Dutch are a detailed people and keep every bit of information they find. Just do a search for "Historische Vereniging" and add the name of the village where your ship was built. Like all your research, even when looking for genealogy, it sometime works to search under the name of the nearest large village and not the name of the exact one shown on your documents. Arnhemse Stoomsleephelling Maatschappij, A.S.M., Arnhemse Scheepsbouw Maatschappij: Established in Arnhem and was located to the Rhine near the John Frostbrug. Set up in 1885, owner: Mr. Prins. Later the name has been modified in Arnhemse Scheepsbouw society. In 1978 the company closed. Except service and repairing of several types inland shipping barges (among other things several from Amsterdam municipality barges). The company also went into the construction of steam engines. During the peak the company had 600 employees in service. Gevestigd in Arnhem en was gelegen aan de Rijn vlakbij de John Frostbrug. Opgericht in 1885 eigenaar: Dhr. Prins. Later is de naam gewijzigd in Arnhemse Scheepsbouw Maatschappij. In 1978 gesloten. Boot, Alphen a.d. Rijn. Scheepswerf "De Industrie". 1908-1977?
Alphen aan den Rijn had been a significant location for shipping as it is dissected by the Old Rhine. The Rhine now has been re-routed and a canal runs through the centre of town. The area Alphen was inhabited over 2000 years ago. In Roman times Alphen was a significant outpost as the old Rhine marked the northern border of the Roman empire. It was the primary port on the mouth of the Rhine and was heavily fortified by the Romans. The family Boot had been living in the South Holland region for several hundred years before eventually starting the ship construction in Alphen. The records show that much of the family earned their living working for the ship builders in the area before setting up their own business. Vooruitgang was founded by Philippus Boot who was born 1824 and died in Alphen in 1902. Philippus’s son Dirk Boot took over the running of Vooruitgang in 1887. In 1890 Dirk switched to building ship out of wood to a new modern construction technique, riveted iron. Being quite a forward thinker Dirk started looking into build marine engines. In 1897 he built an engine which ran but was far from being reliable enough for use. Luckily Dirk had a son, Johannes, that was showing promise in the technical field leaving Dirk to concentrate on ship construction. Dirk had his hands full by the early 1900’s. He and his wife Gerrarda Jongeneel had eight sons and two daughters, Along with opening Vooruitgang and his large family, Dirk managed to find the time to open in Alphen at a new location, a ship repair yard that he named "Werf De Industrie". The repair yard was built just north of where the centre of town is now. This is the yard where engines were repaired and fitted. The Warf Vooruitgang was located outside of town on the south side and just south of the junction of the Old Rijn and the Aarkanaal. The motor fabrication plant was opened by Dirk’s son Johannes in 1910. In the early 1900’s Johannes was sent off to craft Collage in Leiden and after finishing this course in 1903 he attended a technical collage in Bingen called "Rheinische Technicum". After graduating from Tech Collage in October of 1905 he went off to work for an established engine manufacturer in Amsterdam, Kromhout. He worked for Kromhout for only a year and half before moving to another engine manufacturer. He changed jobs three more times. Two more engine manufacturers and he spent six months as a Rhine Tugboat skipper. In short he was looking at the engine industry from every angle. In 1910 he was ready and open the doors on their new manufacturing plant. The staff compliment consisted of two: Johannes and a 18 year old JC Terlouw. JC grandson was in 1977 to help Boot to stay in business by organising the merger of Bronze and Boot. Johannes started building engines for sale in 1910 and would not have sold that many engines in the next few years. Just as well asthe ones he did sell had loads of initial teething problems. In a book written by the Boot family called " A hundred years of ship and motor building" they mention that the early engines didn’t last long. In later years the yard had a hydraulic ship lift 80x11m (the first in Europe), stevendok 36 x 10m and two 20 meters long slips. Some say this yard was extension of the yard t' Kromhout'. Ftj.Tj. 1902/1910 The yard `Welgelegen' of the firm Draaisma Franeker was set up between 1830 and 1840 by the Douwe van der Zee, born in 1799, at Workum. The doughter of Douwe van der Zee, Jetske, married Klaas Draaisma from Franeker. He succeeded Douwe van der Zee between 1866 and 1870 as a ship's timber man on Vliet in Franeker. Supposedly he was already experienced at his father's ship building company. Klaas was a director of the company for a short time because he died in 1874. Johannes, the son of Klaas and Jetske, took over running the company and as from that moment the yard remained in the Draaisma family. De werf ‘Welgelegen’ van de firma Draaisma te Franeker is opgericht tussen 1830 en 1840 door de in 1799 te Workum geboren Douwe van der Zee. De dochter van deze Douwe van der Zee, Jetske, trouwde met Klaas Draaisma uit Franeker. Hij volgde Douwe van der Zee tussen 1866 en 1870 op als scheepstimmerman op het Vliet in Franeker. Vermoedelijk was hij al lange tijd bij zijn schoonvader scheepstimmerknecht. Klaas was maar kort directeur, omdat hij in 1874 stierf. Johannes, de zoon van Klaas en Jetske, nam het bedrijf over en vanaf dat moment blijft de werf in bezit van de familie Draaisma.

van Vlaardingen, Het Kromhout, Gouda. Started in 1819, 1819 - 1823 two owner eigenaren. Dirk Borkus for half owner. The yard lay on the Ijssel near Buitendijks, on the site of the later Stearine candle factory. 1823 D. Borkus became sole owner. 1854 the yard is extended with a slipway. 1867 Dirk Borkus died, his son Jacob continues the yard. 1868 first indication of the name " The Kromhout". 1887 J. Borkus died, his son-in-law Willem Bokhoven continues the yard. The yard is then extended with a forge and a number of large buildings. 1893 the yard was sold to Hubertus of Vlaardingen. The yard had 50 employees in service and built 4 to 6 ships per year, most iron with sails and steam ships. 1905 The company was now owned by Hubertus and his son Jacob under the company name of " H of Vlaardingen". 1915 Later the name was changed to "J. van Vlaardingen". 1916 the yard sold and a new yard under the name "Kromhout" was
